Markdale Florist

There has been a flower shop at 56 Main St W in Markdale since 1969, and three sets of owners have run it. What has not changed is that somebody here puts their approval stamp on every arrangement that goes out the door.

That somebody is Kimberley. She is the last person to see every arrangement before it leaves the building, and she pulls each order for the delivery driver herself. When one is not right, she calls a fire drill: the whole arrangement comes out of the vase and gets rebuilt from the first stem. She does it to her own work. Her reasoning is simple: it is her name at the end of the day, and she is the person who answers the call if something is not right.

Much of what the shop builds is designed around a person rather than a catalogue photograph. When you order flowers, you are asking the shop to represent an apology, an anniversary, a birthday, a new home or a family saying goodbye. Kimberley asks who the flowers are for and what mattered to them, then designs from that answer. Families often tell the shop afterward that the arrangement got the person right.

Regular customers call and ask for Kimberley because she remembers the flowers they send and the ones they would never send. The shop also knows the hard-to-find addresses because its drivers run the same roads every week.

Kimberley has taught floral design at horticultural society meetings. During fall-fair season, she and her staff support the flower and craft sections at fairs in Markdale, Rocklyn, Feversham, Durham, Meaford, Thornbury and Owen Sound.
